About Eye Tests

Medicare and Out-Of-Pocket (OOP)

Anyone holding a valid Medicare Card can have:
  • One comprehensive eye test every three years (If you are less than 65-years-old).
  • One comprehensive eye test every year if you're 65 or older.
  •  An eye test as required if you have an evolving or ongoing eye health condition like glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration.

Are all eye tests covered by Medicare?

They’re not. More specialised eye tests, or consultations for contact lenses, visual fields or dry eye may cost you more. Digital Retinal Photography isn’t covered by Medicare either, but is free at About Sight – so every customer can access the tool to help detect any potential diseases that could threaten their vision.

Why is there an Out-Of-Pocket (OOP)?
To ensure that knowledgeable optometrists with vast experience see to your eyes, we charge a nominal OOP for eye tests. This also allows us to spend the necessary amount of time with each patient, without needing to make up lost money with forcing you to buy something to make our ends meet.

What about private health insurance?
Private health insurance doesn’t usually cover eye tests (some international exceptions). Private health insurance can cover up to 100% of the costs of prescription lenses, frames or contact lenses (depending on your private health extras policy). We urge patients to be familiar with their level of cover and limits to ensure they get the most out of their cover.
